Meet the CrossFit Coaches

THE CROSSFIT STONY BROOK TEAM

Our coaching staff is comprised of the best fitness instructors in the area! We’re as diverse a group as the members of the gym -- because many of us started our fitness journeys here at CrossFit Stony Brook. We are highly experienced in high-intensity functional fitness and in working with people of all fitness levels, but also in specialty, sport-specific programs. Our goal is to provide a family-friendly, welcoming and motivating atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable in their own skin.
  • Michael Denicola

    Owner, Head Coach

    Michael is a Marine Corps veteran who served in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. His athletic background runs the gamut from running marathons and triathlons, pursuing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts, and playing soccer, football and running track in his youth. Michael started CrossFit with his wife in 2008 and quickly developed a passion for fitness and coaching — so much so that he went back to school and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science. Michael specializes in movement and endurance, and working with people fighting obesity, living with MS, RA, and also disabled veterans.

    In Michael’s words: What I love most about coaching our members is “…Seeing the positive changes they make, seeing their accomplishments and the joy in their faces when they do something they never thought possible.”

  • Janine Denicola

    Owner and Commander of Boot Camp

    Janine is the resident Boot Camp Commander, leading the fun, high-impact class with years of experience and dedication to health. In her past, she played tennis and basketball and ran marathons. As a coach, she enjoys seeing members realize just how capable they are, mentally and physically.

    In Janine’s words: “I am a busy mom but making time for yourself is important. That’s what I love about Boot Camp.”

  • John Grass

    Director of Youth Programs, Coach

    John is passionate about coaching today’s youth and specializes in youth exercise, strength and conditioning, and weightlifting. Currently, he’s pursuing his degree in Exercise Science from the California University of Pennsylvania. John was introduced to CrossFIt in 2010, competed for the first time 6 months after joining CrossFit Stony Brook in 2011, and received his certification in March 2012.

    In John’s words: What I love most about coaching my members is “…Learning what motivates them and helping them attain their goals.”

  • Paul Lozano

    Coach

    Paul has been CrossFitting since 2011 and is passionate about general fitness and wellness. He specializes in individualized competitive programming and developing competitive athletes. Paul is a diehard Yankees fan!

    In Paul’s words: “My reason for becoming a CrossFit coach comes from my profession as a social worker. I get more satisfaction from when I see one of my athletes push themselves outside their comfort zone.”
